Commonly Asked Questions

A septic system is an off-grid wastewater treatment system used in areas that are not connected to a public wastewater system.

It typically consists of a two-part system: a tank (or tanks) and a drain field.

The first tank is a large, watertight container that holds wastewater when it first leaves the home. As the wastewater enters the tank, it slowly settles and is divided into three layers. The top layer is made up of solid matter, and it is held in place by large “baffles”. The middle layer is liquid, and the bottom layer is made up of sludge. This sludge is broken down and digested by bacteria in the tank over time. Meanwhile, the liquid passes through the tank’s outlet pipe and into a second tank or into the drain field, which is a network of perforated pipes that are buried in the soil. The wastewater is slowly trickled out and released into the soil, where it is further broken down and filtered down through many layers of dirt and sand. Any remaining solids are broken down by the soil and naturally filtered.

Septic systems are an effective use of the ground’s natural filtration properties!

Getting a sewage system first requires a percolation test to ensure your ground can handle water filtration.

The system is designed and installed based on the number of bedrooms and people in your home (it’s not actually the number of bathrooms that matter!).

Septic systems must generally be 200 feet away from your well and 50 feet away from property lines, though this can sometimes be altered.

We can install new septic systems in as little as one week. Call BluRail Excavating Today!
